Apple of my Eye

It's home-made Apple-Cinnamon Schnapps! Or should that be Apfel-Zimt? I bottled this batch inspired by my blowing a grand on Final Cut Studio at Apple.Com. Between doing post-production on our two Advanced Cinematography features and having to produce my own feature for Advanced Video this semester, I figured I might as well jump into the Big Leagues. I'll chalk up my purchase of Adobe Premiere last year as a learning experience; Premiere doesn't like my camera, for some reason. I've been relegated to using iMovie (shown), though most of my editing has been on my MacTop since I can download my lesser cameras to that. This weekend, I should get out of the house and fill a DVCAM tape with some of the in-camera effects I'd like to try.

The Cactus 3-Gun was rained out... and I was too loaded up with homework to make the trip anyway. That and a sudden death in the family didn't leave me with much writing ambition. My Uncle leaves the Veterans' Day roll and joins those we salute on Memorial Day. I think Uncle Lenny would have liked this picture....

Turning Japanese

I've been kinda stressed out about the new semester starting this week; so much so that I forgot the Caption Contest for a day and totally blew off turning in stages for Sunday's 3-Gun match. What do I do when I'm stressed out about school? How about take up to five naps a day?

What has me stressed about this semester? Sixteen credit hours! Including Advanced Video Production, Advanced Screenwriting, Post-Production for Film/TV, and um, the real killer, JPN101 Elementary Japanese.

I need a drink. And a nap.

Pigeon: Impossible

At the Saloon

Busted my Booze Budget this month and I hardly got a buzz... except for the homemade anisette I tried last week -- you don't have to age that. On the bright side, it seems I won't have to wait months for the final product. Five weeks seems to be the max for most of the recipes I've browsed. Now to find some decanters suitable for my bar. And not all of it with a gun. I played Junior Cinematographer this weekend, trying to incorporate up to three cameras into my 3-Gun match coverage, but only squeaked out one stage with two cams. The tempo of the match and the angle of the winter sun talked me out of stationing my Flip Cam down range to capture the most unusual view of my practical shooter Jon, the scary-business end.

It's just as well that that plan didn't work out; reciprocal camera angles commit the cinematic sin of "Breaking the 180, " often confusing the audience as to where the subject is supposed to be facing. That's not nearly as serious as "Breaking the 180" in the shooter's vernacular, which will get you disqualified for poor muzzle control; I had to Disqualify a beginning lady shooter for this during my turn as Range Officer for the stage in the video.

I pretty much sucked with the shotgun and had equipment issues during the hoser rifle stages... but my "prescription rifle" came through for me on the long range steel. Fighting a strong crosswind, I still managed to ring up the 400-yard MGM bonus steel target to knock 12 seconds off my stage score!

I had worse troubles with Adobe PremiereTM, my high-dollar video editing program. It would only show the first half the movie I exported, so I wound up going back to iMovie. Premiere would have let me separate the audio tracks from the video so that the viewer wouldn't be subjected to jarring effect of switching from the Taccam mic to the PowerShot's. Of course, if I was really good, I would have replaced all of the audio track with Foley effects and pre-recorded, realistic-sounding gunshots... but I had things to do this weekend... like eat and sleep.
