More Holiday Gunny Stuff

Friday, we adjourned to Table Mesa to do some new-shooter instruction and recreational shooting. Scarlet noticed Jon had been snacking on the leftovers this morning.

Jon slipped a .22 conversion kit onto his Glock 19 receiver and rigged up some targets for the youngsters (and ourselves). After the safety briefing and some orientation, we brought out some Targets.com printouts and began the competition with the Balloons. I beat all comers in the Accuracy competition (beat Jon by one balloon and one fly -- we both aced the bullseye target, though his group was much tighter than mine).

Also introduced the kids to some long guns. Here's Cesty lookin' all gangsta with the .223 AK. They also got their first Uzi experience and shot Jon's awesome scoped POF gas-piston AR.

Jon won the Artistic competition by unanimous vote.

What a day for playing hooky!

Why hang around in Tucson the day before Thanksgiving for a computer graphics class in which the instructor has long lost interest in the subject and started teaching website content management? Yeah, I couldn't think of a reason either.

The day dawned chill and damp, but instead of drinking coffee and playing Steel Panthers, we hauled our guns out to Bob's truck and had a range day at the sheltered public range at Ben Avery. Here Bob tries out my Norinco 64S, which was obviously made for someone of a shorter stature.

No pampered guns here. Bob's '44 Mauser (right) got a taste of the elements. It shoots nice! A little high, but I'll bet a bayonet would fix that!

Jon brought out his M1A to function test, his KelTec Sub2000 to zero-in (for ACTS, maybe?), and his Patriot Ordnance gas-piston AR (below), to test his remounted optics... and snipe little rocks from 200 yards away.

After Thanksgiving, we 've got more gun fun planned. This involves The Hebroom and some bowling pins!

Major Suckage

Not me! I was just my typically average journeyman sucky-shooter self, but it was almost painful to watch my buddy Jon self-destruct at the Cactus 3-Gun Practice Match. Good thing we were too busy ROing ourselves to get any video! The stages were my mildly rehashed re-runs re-purposed into an Armistice Day WWI theme... I never need to worry about repeating my rehashes because the set-up crew always has a unique view (plus I never annotate distances on my stage designs).

Did I mention Jon sucked? Okay... one of his M1A magazines sucked... a lot.

The crowning glory of the day? We had more carbine shooters than pistol-only shooters! I scored 7th out of 11 fusilliers, packing my scoped POF-Master, so Jon's iron-sighted M1A naturally had a disadvantage. Besides his suckiness, I mean.

One of the perks of being the stage designer is that I could ensure I'd never be required to put much pressure on my sore scabby knees. Hmm... I still haven't posted those pictures. Pray I do not.

Pics from Mrs. Jake

We couldn't get the junker car's trunk open, so we staged the rifle on the carpet (muzzle facing forward-right).

I think I got more dirt in my mouth on this stage than I got dirt in my knee on the third.

It was a challenge to keep folks from blasting off bits of the car, but we did it! We always suspend reality a bit when we use it, because we gotta hang out of cover to keep from exploding the mirror and such. But it's such a valuable prop: who practices drawing from the driver's seat except the gang-bangers in South Tucson?

To keep things safe, we erected a barrier next to the car to simulate shooting underneath the car body. *Cough*

November ACTS - Jake

Update: By the way, the "Gay Bash" stage required you to rescue some gays in the men's room who were being assaulted by gay-bashers. You were not targeting homosexuals, but rescuing them. I objected to the unnecessary details in the stage description, but was ignored. The Course of Fire Committee is not very PC sometimes.

Labels:

Owie! Bactine please!

I ruined my favorite pair of pants today.

Didn't get any video shot today since I was the primary Range Safety Officer for the new-guy squad (plus Jon, who shot his second ACTS match). I had a minor distraction on the third stage when I tried to do something athletic. I slid to my knees (but saved the gun!), then limped over the next firing position cussing up a storm. The bad knee was the one with a kneepad on it! Our fourth stage really sucked since I had to drop prone and engage the targets from inside a simulated bathroom stall. Jon was a real hero and shot it first, thereby sponging up all the icky restroom floor for the rest of us. Heh.

The gouge in my right knee continued to leak after washing and some iodine, so I hightailed it over to the local Urgent Care body shop and had a doctor look at it. She dug out some dirt and had the nurse irrigate it, before slapping some goop and a dressing/bandage on it. She suggested a regimen of ibuprofen for the pain, but I'm trying a few stiff rums and coke for it tonight.

Oh, the match. It was a LOT of fun, minus the pain and bleeding. There is something to be said for RSOing the new-guy squad... my scores looked pretty good in that light, even next to some of Jon's (who was absolutely blazing with his M1A). Just how depressing would it be to RSO the Agoge Squad (the Uber-Challenge-Me Fanatics) or the Pros from Dover (The CavArms Guys brought along one of the Local 3-Gun Superstars to give ACTS a try)? I'll hoark some pics and/or video if any shows up on the AZ forums.

Hey, scores are up already! HKFreak raaaawks! I scored right in the middle, which ain't so bad for an old fat wounded guy since we had the Pros and some US Marshals show up!

But I'm not begging for any sympathy....

Friday Art Class

My Ronald Reagan pencil drawing got an "A" but Patrick's drawing got displayed in the Student Gallery! Between our instructor Kate, Patrick, young Teddy, and myself, we have a blast in our Friday class. Yes, I'm one of the class comedians. While just about every student in Basic Rendering has way more talent than I do, I've gained the reputation of being a fast worker; while most of the kids were transferring their sketches to the illustration board today, I was putting paint down. Of course, Patrick jokes that I'm putting pressure on everybody else... wrecking the curve.

Kate's been very supportive of my work and tried to give my ego a boost with, "I'll bet you didn't know you were a painter!"

"I painted my porch once, ma'am."

I ought to finish "The Klingers" next week.

I don't even own a beret.

Still Don't See It

After class today, I dropped by Murphy's Guns on Country Club Ave. to see what I could see. Lotsa EBRs on display! A Saiga 12-gauge looked interesting. They seemed to be doing a normal brisk business for the lunch hour. While I was getting the Ranger serviced at Jiffy Lube, Lisa the Biker Chick hooked me up with the address of Tucson Guns and Western Artifacts (Broadway and Camino Seco). Not very crowded, lots of inventory.

In two days, I've visited four of the biggest gun stores in Tucson during the lunch hour and I was the only person filling out a Form 4473. The only other near-transaction I witnessed was a rancher and his wife deciding against an M-1 Carbine as a neighborhood defense weapon. A buddy of his was a Garand cheerleader... I don't know if he ever decided on anything. His wife was buying -- lucky man. My point is... I'm not seeing the big rush to stock up in the event of a looming Assault Weapons Ban II in my town.

Maybe I'll check out Sportsman's Warehouse tomorrow. I've got the Stang on Thursdays.

Update: My PHX reader Palmer disagrees:

J&G has NO AK style rifles and has filled there showroom w/ Moisen's and SKS's - no tins of 762x39 running low on ammo, and prices rising.
in Phoenix Bear arms has sold 25 ARs in the last few days and quan is low.
mail order sales on mags and ammo are backed up for days.
AIM surplus disconnected there phone for the day (today) so they could catch up.

Guess it Needs to Breathe

On the way home from school, I dropped by the Oriental Market to restore my kochujang (red pepper paste) stash and pick up some kimchi (Korean spiced fermented cabbage) for which I've been hankerin'. (Good diet food, ya know.) The cashier added the plastic wrap at checkout, but I could still smell it on the way home. I figure they can't vacuum seal the jars, or they'd risk an explosion (of flavor!) (or putrescence!). I'm tempted to whip up a batch of rice even at this late hour. I'll bet my ice cubes'll taste funny for a few months.
