Howdy!

I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving! I jaunted up to PHX to feast with my adopted extended family and worked on mountains of homework in my spare time. Even passed up the annual Black Friday shooting day at Table Mesa with the Kids in favor of a nap and yet more homework. Good thing I caught my second wind for all the beer and Midnight Croquet in Jon's backyard!

Good times.

Like I Need Another Hole in My Head

...I needed another video camera. The Flip UltraHD fits in my pocket better than the Canon PowerShot and shoots in 16:9 High Def (720p) so I can shoot B Roll with it, in conjunction with my High Def SONY. I'm considering taking it to matches and placing it to get the wide "master shot" while I cover the closer shots with the Canon... but then there's the black side bars that'll show up when mix 16:9 and 4:3 formats.

Y'all don't care about that, do you?

Cactus League Multi-Gun

I was so wrapped up in the movie making that it slipped my mind that the Cactus League Fun Gun Match was scheduled for a week earlier than usual. So I didn't get any stages sent in. Thankfully, League Poobah Terry Allison whipped up four Turkey Day stages, plus a stage that actually awarded a turkey to the stage winner! Jon was so fast I couldn't even capture his whole draw on my new Flip Video Cam!

Jon was top shotgunner (with me in 2nd), but I squeaked ahead of him (and everybody else) in the carbine match! Okay, so I only beat half a dozen riflemen.... Whoohoo, anyway!

I was pretty sloppy on the four pistol stages... even got beat by 3 of the 4 D-Limited shooters. I was shooting a GLOCK 19 like the one pictured at right.

Right behind Jon and I was young Patrick sporting a pretty accurate AK. I'll have to give him crap next match about flipping off his safety before the clock started! :)

How it's Done

Snuf Leamon of the curiously named "Snuf Film Productions" masterminded the special effects of our flick. Here's a behind-the-scenes peek at the most ambitious shot, minus the chainsaw noise. Actor Grant Hunker was actually the Director of one of last year's 8-minute features from the Advanced Cinematography class. Snuf and I were in class together for Basic Video last year; I hope he goes back into production soon so I can intern with him.

Lenny's My Uncle

I missed this on Veteran's Day because that was Day 1 of principal photography. Front page of the hometown newspaper!

Also using this post to give a shout-out to Uncle Ronnie (SMSgt, USAF, Retired) and Aunt Rena (USAF and Air Force Wife), Uncle Billy (MCPO, USN, Retired), Uncle Louie (USN), Lil Bro (USAF), Mom (Air Force Wife, Retired), and cousin-in-law "Stiggy" (USAF).

Plus all my Skivvy Nine buddies and the Army, Navy, and Marine folks with whom I've served to "Keep the Morning Calm."

It's a Wrap!

"Arizona Chainsaw Massacre" joined "Apprehension" "in the can" at sunset yesterday and my poor aching feet couldn't be happier. I don't think I've ever worked so long and hard on something other than National Security before. Friday night, I took a 20-minute nap in the driveway before unloading the truck. I should have taken a nap before driving home, but the outdoor horror movie set was way out in the ass-end of Marana AZ on Friday the 13th and I could almost hear the banjoes playing.

He's SUPPOSED to look Creepy

Ended first day of principal photography on "Apprehension" today. I finally got to put my budget police rig to good use by arming young Gabriel here. The last scene of the day was shot on school ground and our ersatz officer grew only cursory interest from the campus cop.

Here's Gabriel when he's not trying to look creepy.

Sunday Litany

Beer is the mind-killer.

Beer is the little death that brings total obliteration.

I will face my beer.

I will permit it to pass over me and through me.

And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see it's path.

When the beer has gone there will be nothing.

Only I will remain.

The Lambourghini

The reason I haven't been posting much this week is that my nose has been buried in the Operations Manual for this baby, the RED-ONE HD movie camera, known as the Lambourghini of digital movie cameras. Hopefully, they'll have some dolly tracks erected by tomorrow, so I can practice some dolly tracking shots... just in case our Director of Photography gives me a chance to take some shots during principal photography.

Being the ever helpful Armorer, I brought a spare rifle scope into class today to let the Director experiment with a thru-scope shot for the movie. I think that would be best done through the magic of post-production, but I'm just a camera operator. Since he wants to somehow mount the scope to the camera, he's going to have to track a moving target (and hopefully LEAD the target a bit, so all the gunnies watching don't shout BULLSH*T!). We shoot next week!
