Mailing it in

When my Computer Graphics instructor declared his ignorance of and antipathy for the slated Adobe Illustrator tool, my enthusiasm for the course diminished, naturally. At least he taught us the basics of logo design, which is our next graded project. Similar to our Photoshop projects, our Illustrator work must re-design the logos or illustrations of a "Green" company, since I suspect our instructor is a crystal-carryin', tree-huggin', patchouli-wearin' hippie of the First Order. I actually have a couple logo designs made up for Four Seasons Windpower, LLC, but I won't post 'em here, 'cuz I'm afraid they'll steal the far superior design. But I made sure my hippy instructor'll like them.

Straight to Video

I think the match was Jon's to win. He was two-for-two with his grenade throws and was smart enough to bring high-brass #5 shells just in case the Texas Stars somehow got placed further out than the 12 yards he specified in the design (they did... and we were both on the set-up crew!).

Here's VIDEO of my crappy performance, if you're interested.

Here's VIDEO of some of Bob's performance... for Bob. Nice grenade toss!

Cactus 2008 Halloween Match, Stage 2

SCORING: Thursday night
MINIMUM ROUNDS: 27 (18 CARBINE AND 9 PISTOL)
TARGETS: Four (4) USPSA paper targets, Nine (9) bat silhouettes , and one (1) rifle plate

START SIGNAL: AUDIBLE STOP SIGNAL: LAST SHOT FIRED

START POSITION: NORMAL READY IN BOX “A”, LOADED PISTOL IN HOLSTER. CARBINE IS LOADED, WITH SAFETY ON AT TABLE “A”.

PROCEDURE: ON SIGNAL, ENGAGE B1 – 9 WITH PISTOL (one round each) AND THEN SAFELY GROUND PISTOL ON TABLE. ENGAGE B1-9 AGAIN WITH CARBINE (one round each) AND MOVE TO BOX “B”. ENGAGE T1 – 4 (zombies holding children) AND RP1. BATS REQUIRE TWO HITS (one pistol & one rifle hit and are considered A-zones for scoring), PAPER REQUIRES TWO HITS, AND RIFLE PLATE REQUIRES ONE HIT TO SCORE. THE RIFLE PLATE IS CONSIDERED AN A-ZONE FOR SCORING (-1) FOR THE MULTIGUN VERSION OF THIS STAGE.

Bat targets are stenciled on USPSA no-shoot paper targets. Round paper no-shoot targets are paper plates.

The only thing that kills the nasty rabbit is the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch.

Labels:

Cactus 2008 Halloween Match, Stage 4

SCORING: Thursday night
MINIMUM ROUNDS: 33 (16 pistol, 16 carbine, and 1 grenade)

TARGETS: One (1) bucket (guardian monster) , and sixteen (16) USPSA PAPER TARGETS

Then move to barrel C and engage T5-8 from under the stick. Shooter then moves to table D, safely grounds pistol, and engages T9-11 & R1-5 with carbine. Paper requires two hits. Note: no set time penalty is assessed for a miss with the grenade in addition to time needed to retrieve penalty ammo and that needed to engage G2 with pistol.

Here's new shooter Carl scoring a bulls-eye with the grenade (Tunnel Monster, a bucket with a cardboard facade, not shown).

Friday Art Class

Our latest medium is water color and colored pencil.

Motif: a book or magazine cover (must include a narrative).

My narrative is basically, "Why read about it?"

The instructor's preliminary critique was to add some color to the poolside table... I thought I'd post this before I wreck it.

Wish me luck.

Hey, Wyatt!

This isn't loud enough for ya?

Lemme turn it up!

When I turned on the Michigan-Penn State game, the teams were tied, but the Nits soon pushed back the Wolverines into their own end zone for a safety.

Joe Pa wins 46-17. Sweet.

Happiness is a Belt-fed Weapon

But I had to content myself with a full-auto Uzi.

There was no 100-yard-plus rifle shots required in this match, so I brought out the Hebroom for fits and giggles. And Daisy Cat came out to play! On the only stage I got videoed (Thanks, Daisy!) she must have been reading my mind, because she eschewed her rifle and charged the targets with her hi-cap Bersa 9-mm. I hope HKFreak's ladies videoed it, because it was a sight to see the little lady charge and bust caps like that, laughing maniacally all way. She beat my time too! I got pretty good hits, but nailed a paper plate "baby" during my charge (yep, the stage is a variation of Save the Children I've done for the Cactus Halloween shoots). I also hosed my normally disciplined burst control towards the end and had to transition back to the Glock.

It was a Happy Fun Time at the range today!

Whoohoo! Phillies!

The Phillies win the NL Pennant! I can imagine my Grandpa downing the last of his Schmidt's and flicking the ash off his Camel Unfiltered as he brushes off his bath towel shawl and whoops it up at the silent TV. Yup, "Pepa" doesn't know that Harry Callas isn't broadcasting any more and it's safe to turn up the volume. Thankfully, the Phils finished off the uber-hated Dodgers (hated by me, not Pepa... he reserved his vitriol for the Yankees).

I'm kinda indifferent to whomever wins the World Series now, but I'd kinda like to see the Phillies win one for the cranky old man in the grey non-descript ballcap. He's probably got a few old Bethlehem Steel buddies rooting with him up there....

Labels:

Bah!

It seems the Mitten-staters mustered 22 shooters for an ACTS match last weekend and nobody brought a camera.

That's weak.

BTW, I've been convinced at the latest Shooters Meeting to bring the Hebroom instead of the AK. Thus I doom myself to strive for Awesomeness instead of beating my Nemesis or winning the Match. Y'all know the importance of Awesomeness to the Shooting Sports, right?

I made some pretty cool Retirement presentations with the program, but I never really enjoyed the full-fledged "Death by PowerPoint" embraced by the military.

Maybe I just didn't apply myself.

Got my first paper back from Writing 101 (a memoir)... "Fine work," sez Teach. Only two minor mistakes in three pages and I got dinged for not explaining adequately what "STOP LOSS" meant.

Oh well... it's an A! I saw some of the papers coming back to my fresh-out-of-high-school classmates. Lotsa blue ink.

Gee, you'd think this would encourage me to write more? Naaaah.

I'm not a Socialist

Mr. Completely tried to cajole me into attending the GunBlogger Rendezvous this weekend, but I couldn't attend, due to my college classes. I'm likely to apply the same excuse for my 30th High School Class Reunion next year. Yep, I'm not very social, and now that I've got a good excuse, I'll stick to it like Loctite, the permanent stuff. Heck, I'd much rather meet a bunch of gunbloggers I've never met than bring back some uncomfortable high school memories....

Believe me, I've got a cast iron memory for every single stupid, inconsiderate, awkward, or cruel thing I've ever uttered (or heard)... and those seemed to peak in my high school years. Gunbloggers might only know me by the stupid, inconsiderate, awkward, or cruel things I've posted and heck, none of them have probably read them very closely. Hopefully, I had some illuminating content to make them forget the dreck.

So maybe when I'm financially and temporally set again, I'll make the trip to Reno. I'll be the guy in the corner doing breathing exercises to fight the nervous nausea.
