It's not a Hallucination

...if you're asleep.

Twice last night, I drifted off to sleep, only to hear my alarm ring tone go off on my cell phone. Only thing was, it was nowhere near time to wake up and my cell phone showed no evidence of having rung or being activated. This is almost as bad as nights when I wake up to the imaginary doorbell. Not nearly as bad as the dream where a dog is suddenly barking inches from my face. I really hate that one. Probably has something to do with alcohol withdrawal, I bet. Well, I pounded lots of coffee and finished my homework before dawn. I should go for a walk but it's frikkin' cold out this morning. A nap before school would be nice.

Better Than Homework

My Adobe AfterEffects instructor postponed the deadline of our first formal projects this weekend, so instead of slaving away on mine today, I took up a challenge posted at Snowflakes in Hell by Robb Allen of Sharp as a Marble. The AE part was easy, but Final Cut Pro gave me fits bitching about a memory error and YouTube choked on the original file I first uploaded.

This is Cute

Start Our State - Political Organization - Tucson AZ (Facebook)

Why settle for being the 51st U.S. State when we (Pima County, the Bluest county in the Grand Canyon State) could be the 32nd Mexican state? Once the Cartel is firmly ensconced here, you'll easily out-gun all those gun-humping Rethuglican Nazis! It'll be Heaven on Earth!

New Camera

Slid a brand new 4 GB SD card into the Pentax K100D and got a Memory Card Error.

Pulled the 8 GB SD out of the point-and-shoot Canon A590 and got the same thing.

Dug out the 32 MB SD left over from an original PowerShot and it worked. Then checked the Internet and learned the K100D takes a 2 GB card... and nothing more. At least the Pentax doesn't shoot video....

Gotta get out and and shoot with it more... but not this week. I'm shooting a movie (Audio Guy) and a match this weekend. Update: So maybe I'm not shooting a movie this weekend. At least I've got an extra day to slave over homework.

Year of the Rabbit Too

Tuesday, February 15, 2011

Year of the Rabbit

My art instructor Miss Katie formally introduced our second project tonight, a Year of the Rabbit themed Commercial Illustration. It should feature a rabbit of some kind in the foreground and contain a mid-ground and background, advancing warm colors at the fore, with retreating cooler colors to the back. Mmmm... Jessica Rabbit! No, wait, that's trademarked. I submitted three sketches, a jackrabbit in a desert scene, a fluffy white bunny, and a Tucson gangsta cartoon bunny in front of a low-rider and a Native Reservation casino. After further research identified this as the year of the Metal Rabbit, I changed the car to a ricer racer and gave the gangsta rabbit a Death Bunny T-Shirt.

Then, after finishing up my first project, a dual self-portrait, I killed time by surfing on my desktop Mac to my favorite rabbit theme of all time, Cat Shit One. When Perfessor Katie came by again, I had to give her a peek. My cartoon bunny would have been easier to execute in the prescribed micron pen and watercolor, but I let her convince me that I could do something similar, being the gun bunny she knows I am from the last class I had with her back in 2008.

Introducing Gun Bunny!

Incidentally, the Rabbit characters in the manga Apocalypse Meow originated from a play on the Japanese word for "Rabbit, " usagi.

USA G.I.

I decided to make mine a little more mainstream by using the M88 Kevlar helmet, instead of the floppy boonie hats used in the anime.

New Toy

I got this used Pentax DSLR so I could use my old lenses, but the 18-to-85mm lens that came with it will probably ensure I never use my normal and wide-angle prime lenses again.

Now to play with it this weekend!

T'was cool to learn I bought it from a serious artist.

WTF, Clapper?

It's all over the 'Net and TV today how Director of National Intelligence James Clapper described the Muslim Brotherhood as a secular organization. Jeez... There's no one else in the upper echelon of today's government that I've actually met twice over the years*, so I've been kind of a fan of the guy. Statements like his boner today make it difficult to remain so. Is he that ill-informed or is he under political pressure to gloss over the MB's nature?

* Met him when he was J2, US Forces/Korea, and again when he was Director, Defense Intelligence Agency.

I Need a Toy Lawyer

Reportedly, removing the orange tip from an AirSoft gun is illegal (or maybe not, if you can trust the internet)... but replica guns and movie props don't have orange tips. Does that mean I can't legally use an AirSoft gun made with an orange tip as a movie prop by removing or painting over the orange tip? Some blank-firing guns have an orange or red plug in the barrel, but not all.

Also, if I want a custom tiger-stripe paint job on a rifle and the flash hider ends up orange, is this now an outlawed weapon? I think a day-glo orange AR would be really bitchin'.

In the meantime, I'm keeping a can of fluorescent orange Krylon on my prop box and an eye peeled for the cops. I think I just answered my own question.

Sunday, Sunday, Sunday!

Since the movie shoot I was on tap for this weekend has been rescheduled for later in the month, I think I might drag my butt out to Kevin Baker's Pin Shoot at the Tucson Rifle Club this Sunday. I'll definitely shoot .45, but I'm up in the air whether I'll shoot my Heavy Metal single-stack Colt or game it with the double-stack Para-Ordnance. Something tells me the little angel on my shoulder will make me bring the single-stack, since the Superstition 3-Gun is next month.

PCC Casting Call

Come on out and meet some advanced movie-makers, master their scripts, and become a local movie star! This could be your big break! Oh, who am I kidding? It'll be a lot of fun, anyway! Most of them know the importance of good craft services and catering, so if you're a starving artist, you'll be good for a day at least.

I'm not shooting anything personally this semester, but I hope to crew for a few friends.

Digital Drawing and Painting

Our first in-class project was to be a non-representational abstract inspired by a selected range of classical music, exploring the palettes and features of Corel Painter.

Look random enough to you? I was worried that the instructor much find it too "representational," but figured if I didn't add black stripes after the yellow "Hairy Brush" effect, no one would immediately peg this as inspired by "Flight of the Bumblebee." I think I got away with it. Shhhhhhh.
