Again!

As some of you know, I've been on and off the Korean Peninsula quite a few times and I run out of fingers counting the many provocative incidents that have occurred either on the border, in disputed waters, and even deep inside South Korea. Hot on the news that the Norks have a new uranium enrichment plant, they bombard a South Korean island, killing two ROK Marines (they must have been direct hits -- those guys are pretty tough). I suspect the Nork military is feeling its oats now that Kim Jong-il is on the wane; maybe they're showing Kim Jong-un (Kim Junior) what they can get away with without serious retaliation. Those sharply worded UN resolutions really burn, you see.

So, am I gonna have to find out how this Retired Reserve thing works? Oh, please, give me an excuse to get back in uniform. I even have a set of awesome Sennheiser headphones now. Sure, I'll have to shave, get a haircut, lose some weight, get my clearance resurrected... all worth it to hear the last utterances of the Pyongyang dialect before it's spoken only in Hell.

Reunited, At Last

Jon's little buddy Mooglie is bouncing through Piddler's Green with his friend Rustle now.

This has been a bad year for furry friends. Mooglie was preceded to the Green by my Lenny and Squiggy, as well as Jon's Rustle. This week we have to be grateful for the years of joy they brought to our lives.

From Noir to Western

Instead of kicking back on Veterans' Day watching the war movies on the History Channel, I was on the set of "Byline," the Pima Community College Digital Arts Program's feature production this year. It's a film noir written by Shannon Mier, directed by Chris Raboin, and starring Kathryn Owczarzak. Instead of working behind the camera, I was slaving behind the microphone/boom pole as Utility Audio crewman, fulfilling my crew time for the Location Audio class.



After the second night of "Byline," I was free to help out on the set of my friend's Western. Gerry Gilbert co-starred in my Adv. Vid. project "Always," and approached me for some movie gun advice during pre-production of his own short project. I was all set to join the staff when he had to move his shooting dates to the same weekend as "Byline." Fortunately, the minimum requirement for Location Audio is 4 hours on the job, so my two nights Thursday and Friday were plenty, I hope, to keep my Audio professor happy. Since I was operating on short sleep Saturday, I just put on some Western duds and showed up in case they needed an extra extra. It turns out Gerry's co-director was on the Audio crew for PCC's feature movies last year, so I was able to establish I wasn't just a nob off the street. Sunday, I wore crew clothes and worked utility audio/grip until they wrapped.

Lower the Boom

For the second straight Veterans Day, I'll be working all day instead of enjoying the federal holiday like most of you... and that's okay. Last year, I was Camera Operator, Armorer, and Grip for the school's production of two student movies. This year, I'm doing Utility Audio and Armorer for a single film noir shot over the next 4 days.

There's only three jobs in the Audio Department: Head Mixer, Head Boom Operator, and UA. Since the Director had asked me to do the Armorer thing again, I didn't bother pursuing the leadership positions... I'll still put in more than the 4 hours required of a UA drone, including replacing the Head Mixer on the recorder and Boom-Boom on the fishing pole. I'm scheduled for two full days of duty, then I get to help a friend shoot a Western on Saturday/Sunday! It's a good thing I don't have much homework this weekend!

Friday night, most of the Location Audio Department hung around for evening rehearsals for the Pima Community College production of "Byline," a film noir written by Shannon Mier and directed by Chris Raboin. This gave us the chance to practice booming and mixing the talent before the shoot next week. Little did we know we'd be serenaded....
