You Might Be Wondering

...why a Tucson gunblogger and military veteran hasn't blogged about the Pima County SWAT Team's gunning down of Marine Corps veteran Jose Guerena and subsequent cover-up.

Well, I live in Pima County and Sheriff Dupnik would have no trouble figuring out where I live.

And you never know when one of those Oops Raids will happen again.

At my house.

Just saying.

In other news, the Oath Keepers will muster and march to Guerena's home in his memory tomorrow.

Gateway to the Classics

I got a Kindle e-reader from Amazon this week (image from same), mostly because my Visa Card Rewards were burning a hole in my pocket and this was the most practical item offered. Once I got it, I was disappointed that Larry Correia's Monster Hunter books haven't made the leap to the technology yet. I'm not as romantic about the physical presence of books at my friend Carteach0; I'm a hermit packrat with the floor of my linen closet covered with paperbacks and a bookshelf full of hardcover books (and textbooks I refuse to sell back). If I could convert them all to e-books and free up that space, I would.

I grew up reading and still read contemporary science fiction (Asimov, Niven-Pournelle, Clarke, etc.), fantasy (Tolkien, Moorcock, Eddings, etc.), and military fiction (Griffin, Clancy, countless others), but never really read the Classics other than Amazing Stories from the hey-day of sci-fi. A friend just tipped me off to ManyBooks.Net, a repository of free classical literature digitized and archived by Project Gutenburg. Now I have no reason not to check out Zane Grey, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Mark Twain, and others. I've been reading Grey's "Desert Gold" for the past two nights at bedtime, and man, can he tell a story! As a special bonus, this story is set right where I live, in the Sonoran Desert.

I still have a stack of borrowed paperbacks I need to get through, so I think I'll alternate between the Kindle and the stack. Or maybe this will energize me to get through that stack first and return them so my friend doesn't get antsy about me hoarking his books for so long. My summer course load has been cut to three-quarter time by the cancellation of a class, so I really have no excuse not to pound out some reading this summer. Of course, I'll have to budget some time for screenwriting and screenplay reading, but this injection of the Classics ought to help that, right?

Can We Kill Him Now?

If your pit bull killed and ate a small child, it would be put down post-haste. This piece of wasted DNA has been declared "incompetent to stand trial," so why can't we just put him down? Why must we house and medicate the criminally insane at great cost to the taxpayer? Why can't we try him in absentia as if he had escaped to France, instead of to inside his warped mind?

Tactical Blow-Dryer

After the quick sight-in Saturday, I was really looking forward to trying out the newly braked and scoped New Thumper at the Cactus Match. Two thumbs up. I gotta watch where I stick the muzzle, though. Hopefully, the next match will let me move the power setting off zero.

May Cactus Match

Had a great late-May dinner gathering with Jon and Bob and their wives, even after the Procrastination Monster struck and the local range closed their short-range bays when I visited there to zero my new scope before heading to Phoenix. Instead, I hit the Ben Avery Public Range up in PHX, then doubled back in time to dig into the great eats at Jon's Place. Sighting in the Vortex scope was easy, though a bit unscientific. Having shined a laser through the bore in my living room ahead of time, I knew it was going to hit a little low/right, so when it shot that way at the 25-yard range, I cranked the knobs to guesstimate based on my ignorance of what MOA means at that range, and got it right after my third five-shot string. I spent more time waiting for the range to call a cease-fire to retrieve my target stand than I did to zero the scope crafted by the finest Filipino optics makers. In Sunday's match, the New Thumper worked like a champ, where I lagged behind 8 of the 10 the .223 poodle-shooters, as I pretty much expected.

Since Jon went back to his light-weight speedy line-up, he still managed to beat the whole long gun field, plus all three of the Master Limited shooters in pistol. Here's his long gun performance, which is pretty darned impressive!

Do You Have a Gun?

With eyes freshly dilated from the optometrist, I didn't expect that line of questioning from the lady at the glasses shop.

"Excuse me?"

"Do you have a gun? Please, shoot me!"

Oh, I get it... you're having a bad day -- probably why I had to wait so long to get served. Still, a weird thing to ask a total stranger. On a Air Force Base where I'm forbidden to pack heat.

I couldn't resist checking out the nearby BX Gun Shop afterward.

Opening Night

Tonight the AdCine feature "Byline" premiered at the Pima Community College Proscenium Theater. Most of the "stars" were there, including this glamorous bunch, who incidentally got as much applause during the closing credits as any of the humans. Yes, this is motion picture school... NOBODY budges while the credits are rolling.

It was also the first night of the Student Showcase, where proud entries from the Video, Film, and Film Animation classes entertained the audience, consisting mostly of students, friends, family, faculty, and casts. I wonder whether the Doritos commercial came from the Commercial Production class or Doritos... it was that good. Update: It was the work of wizard cinematographer Nick Murray, who is now in contention for a National ADDY award after winning the Gold at local and state levels.

Of course, the event was a great time to schmooze with classmates, some of whom will graduate this year and maybe move to Hollywood... or into a van down by the river. You never know in this business.

Good to Know

Got a call from a fraud-prevention service on behalf of my credit union this morning. Seems they were concerned someone was going on a shopping spree on my credit card. No, that was just me frittering away my latest GI Bill check... before 6 am. Would that it was going toward ammo or cool gun stuff, but alas, it was all movie production equipment.

The student Western I helped score won't make it into the Student Showcase this weekend, but I'll ask the Director to YouTube it so you all can enjoy it too. I saw it for the first time at Final Hand-in on Monday. Looked pretty sharp! I didn't get to see Mario's shoot 'em-up featuring my toy box contents, so I'm looking forward to that. Hopefully the lady driving the Big Brown Truck of Happiness will arrive early enough that I don't miss the Monday night showing.

Meet Spenser

I jaunted up to Phoenix this weekend to blow off my homework and hang out at Jon's and was surprised to see an addition to his family, Spenser (aka Tiny Pickle).

Spenser is a recovering canine parvovirus patient, so he'll fill out as he gets better. His feet are at least as big as Brodie's; Jon estimates he'll be bigger than The Uranium Dog (he's that dense). I've noticed Brodie is much less of an attention hound now that he's got a little buddy following him around.

A Long Walk Home

So the story now is that ObL and several of the people greased by the SEALs were unarmed when they raided bin Laden's Pakistan compound. I wasn't there, so I can only guess what happened, but I'll put myself in the boots of the on-scene commander, as unqualified to do that as I am.
  • People are shooting at us
  • We just lost a helicopter and barely have enough room to extract our people
  • Sucks to be you, al Qaeda people!
What are you going to do? Tell a few SEALs to walk down the the road and turn themselves over to the Pakistani Military Academy so that Terrorist Scum #1 and his squeeze can take their seats on the chopper? I don't think so, Muchacho! Although it might have been fun to hang ObL by the ankles from a rappelling rope for a ride out to the carrier, weight, overloading, and fuel consumption are big considerations in long-distance helicopter flight. Whether the decision was made by the Mission Commander or the first SEAL to get his sights on ObL, I'm really okay with it. Good thing they had enough capacity to take his whole body along; I would have been okay with just his head, but imagine the stink that would cause with the Arab World.

OPSEC

Yahoo! OBL's dead. And buried at sea, so that his final resting place is lost to history.

Oh, really? Tell me the ship that dropped him into Davy Jones' backyard didn't have GPS and recorded the exact spot in the ocean where they dropped the rancid piece of subhuman filth.

I'm okay with that, but guard that piece of information like a military secret, do not disseminate to all the Navy, and do NOT use that location EVERY time to dump your shipboard trash, sewage, and bacon grease. Do it on a rotation so that the local Wahhabi Arabs don't eventually figure out that a new sea mound of garbage the size of Manhattan is where we dropped OBL... where they'll build a shrine. Use it on special occasions, like 9-11, Christmas, and the Captain's birthday, sure, but keep it safe, please.
