Xmas Toy Match

The Cactus Match League reserves the Sunday after Christmas for a Non-match Event designed to let folks try out their Xmas toys on the League's targets in the open bays of the Practical Shooting range (thereby bypassing the crowds at the Public Range showing up for the same purpose). Bay C was set up to shoot from a firing line and consisted of reactive steel targets, including some swingers and spinners for folks bringing out .22's. Bay D featured three shooting boxes facing:
a. Arrays of USPSA paper targets, including two no-shoots, plus some steel reactive targets down at the back berm.
b. A Texas Star and three steel popper targets.
c. Three Steel Challenge targets

I didn't bring any Christmas toys, but I did bring the G19 along to work out my rusty trigger finger. When all three shooting boxes were free, I ran the whole bay as a single pistol stage a few times. Jon even ran them multi-gun, but I didn't bring along any long guns myself.

Bob (pictured) brought along the coolest Xmas toy, a '28-vintage 1903 Springfield. Our friend Mike showed up with a nice Egyptian AK (with an uncool thumb-hole stock). I claimed some cool points myself after the others took turns knocking down the steel targets with the AK; the last shooter left two of them standing. I asked Mike for only two rounds and smacked down both of the stragglers the first time I'd ever touched the weapon. Boy, did my head swell.

Jon did some pretty good shootin,' himself.

I Cordially Invite Y'all

...to delay your gratification and try a yummy and oh-so alcoholic treat -- a berry cordial made with distilled spirits, your favorite berries, a cup of sugar, and some common spices.

It makes a great Christmas gift and keeps your host too hammered to wake you up too early the day after Christmas! It's simple to make: in a clean storage jar, dump some chopped berries, sugar, spices (the recipes I've seen call for cloves, stick cinnamon, or coriander seeds) and seal it up for 2 to 6 months (the recipes differ). As for spirits, its a great way to convert a great big plastic bottle of value vodka, rum, or gin into a fine sippin' liquor perfect for after-dinner chats around the fireplace... just remember to transfer it from the Mason jar in which you steeped it to a fancier decanter before serving it to friends.

You can even pour the berries over ice cream afterwards... but do not serve to minors! As much as the berry flavors leech out into the liquor, the alcohol soaks into the fruit. Earlier his year, I mixed a batch of strawberries and raspberries; and strawberries and blackberries for the Holidays in Phoenix; I also just started a batch of raspberry only, since strawberry is kind of a boring flavor. I won't give you my recipes, because I haven't followed any particular one. Give G00gl3 a try, then experiment! Blog your results!

Yikes!

The Blizzard of '09 hitting the East Coast right now made me glad I decided not to brave the road trip Home this winter. This accident yesterday reminds us all that water (frozen or not) need not be the cause of all winter traffic mishaps. I'll be driving slow this Christmas Eve.

I <3 Woot

One of the great things about Woot.com (besides the killer deals) is the imaginative sales chatter that goes with each deal. Today's deal shows that Woot's not above poking a little fun at the current Administration.

Copied in its entirety because it'll be gone tomorrow:

DIGITAL DIPLOMACY

“As a token of the friendship between our peoples, Madame Secretary, I humbly present to you this hand-carved 16th-century teakwood ceremonial mask, reflecting the ancient traditions of our native craftsmen.”

“On behalf of the American people, thank you, Mr. Foreign Minister. And in the interest of promoting cultural understanding between two great nations, please accept this token of affection from the United States: the Kodak Easyshare 8” Wireless Digital Frame.”

“Um, I see. Yes, uh, thank you. What does it do, exactly?”

“This fine electronic frame connects directly to photo-sharing sites like Kodak Gallery and Flickr, making it easier than ever before to stay in touch with your digital-photo memories.”

“My, how, er, considerate. A digital photo frame.”

“But not just any digital photo frame. The Kodak Easyshare 8” Wireless Digital Frame features an intuitive QuickTouch border, which not only lets you scroll through your photos with the touch of a fingertip, but also displays the latest news, weather, sports, and more.”

“Huh, yeah. Uh, don’t get me wrong, it sounds cool, and I know it’s the thought that counts. I guess I sort of expected something a little higher class from the world’s only superpower.”

“Well, as we say in America, there’s nothing higher class than the wireless convenience and multimedia functionality of the Kodak Easyshare 8” Wireless Digital Frame.”

“Wow. Are you sure you’re from the United States? The big, rich country with all the nuclear missiles?”

“Ah-haw-haw-haw. I see now why your people are renowned for their sense of humor. But there’s more to the Kodak Easyshare 8” Wireless Digital Frame. It can also play MP3s stored on its 512MB internal memory or on a memory card (sold separately).”

“Right. Right. Let me ask you: are you serious?”

“As Secretary of State, I assure you that I’d never joke about the Kodak Easyshare 8” Wireless Digital Frame. It’s a matter our administration treats with the utmost seriousness. Especially since Kodak paid for our plane fare and hotel rooms. Let me also express my sincere hope that these talks lead to a closer relationship between our nations and renewed cooperation on matters of international concern. Kodak: Share Moments, Share Life.”

“Yeah, great. Listen, can I have that mask back?”

Take That, MythBusters

Tonight on Sniper: Inside the Crosshairs, The History Channel confirmed the "myth" that the MB bunch claimed was "busted." They scoffed at Gunny Carlos Hathcock's "through the scope" kill of an enemy sniper because they couldn't replicate it, yet they never tried to shoot through any analog of a Soviet Bloc PU sniper scope. THC used a red-dot scope that mimicked the fewer baffles of optics evident in the PU scope and drove a .308 round through the scope AND the dummy's head. Eat that, Hollywood Pukes.

Yup, I'm really endearing myself to the industry in which I'm trying to enter, ain't I?

Update: I've been corrected in Comments. I hadn't seen the episode or found the synopsis in my research. My apologies for inferring that MB's sloppy science is not so thorough, at least when the viewers call them on it. It just irks me that they were so willing to call the Marines liars for so long.

Book Report: Off Road

A book report during Winter Break? But I'm on VACATION! Oh, wait, a book review! And it's a free book sent by a fellow blogger! And it doesn't have guys rocketing around in armored suits with endless supplies of missiles and rocket fuel! Not that there's anything wrong with that....

The blurb under the title telegraphs the punch of this book, but Steve entertains and moves with his words, following a self-absorbed urban professional as he returns to his trailer park roots and begins concurrent odysseys; a character journey to find himself, and an off-road jaunt up and down a mountain with his estranged Dad and little brother.

Steve captures the beauty of the Colorado Rockies and the human urge to commune with them. Or conquer them from the driver's seat. The reader can see the high drama coming at them like a charging Hummer with a whip antenna, but the read is worth it. This is the first novel of its kind on my bookshelf, but it won't be the last, even if I have to pay for the sequel myself!

What did you want, two pages double-spaced in 12 point Times New Roman? Who do you think you are? Professor Watry?

CB's Picture Show

I never bother doing movie reviews, because I always wait until the pix come out on DVD, so it's old news by then. Not in this case, as our Documentary class got a look at "Anvil: The Story of Anvil," which, being a documentary, isn't burning up the matinee circuit right now, but looks to tear a hole through the movie awards for this year.

This flick is so entertaining, I suspected it might be a mockumentary, a Canuck This is Spinal Tap. Not so... it's for real! The film starts with the group touring Japan in the 80s with several groups (Bon Jovi, for instance) that went on to sell millions of albums... but Anvil fell into obscurity in Canada. The film maker Sacha Gervasi (who used to be their roadie) followed them on a disastrous European tour, then anticipates the train wreck of going into hock to finance their 13th studio album with the only record producer who'd ever done them right.

Gervasi manages to sneak in some homages to Spinal Tap with a trip to Stonehenge and a shot of a control knob that "goes to 11." This is a great movie (and a skimpy movie review)! It's a funny feel-good story about some funny-looking Canadians who never gave up their dream of rocking on forever.

Not a Good Fall

My shootin' buddy Jon and his wife lost their lab Marley (below) right before Thanksgiving -- and yesterday they had to put their ferret Rustle to sleep. It's a blessing that neither passing was a surprise; they'd both been ailing for quite some time. They leave behind buddies Brody and Mooglie to help cheer up their humans.

Whew!

Semester's almost over! My relief is tempered by the fact that my perfect 4.0 GPA might be in danger. My first Audio project got an appalling grade due to the fact that I failed to record the music tracks to the target DAT media... stupid analog equipment! My second and final project was much better, but the written final might have been weak enough to wreck my "A." I crushed my Documentary written final, but my notional documentary proposal package was a little light in industry support. I'd like to thank Dave Kopel, Breda, and Michael Bane/Marshal Halloway (both of Down Range TV) for taking the time to help a rookie film maker with an imaginary documentary. I did include my funding rejection letter from the Joyce Foundation in the package, just for giggles.

Had the Wrap Party for Advanced Cinematography last night, but I couldn't hang around long, since my Doc package was still missing most of its budget the night before it was due. Well, plus the fact that I'm not exactly Mr. Social. Was a good time, even though my asocial stomach wouldn't let me partake of some yummy-looking Buffalo Wild Wings.

Next semester:
Post-Production
Advanced Video
Advanced Screenwriting
Elementary Japanese (damn you PCC for not recognizing my Korean credits!)

Brody: Beer Bottle Bandito

Brody/Picklehead made Midnight Croquette a challenge. He'd either run off with the ball (the red one is his favorite) or snatch an unattended beer bottle. I guess if you can play midnight croquette outdoors with friends and family, wearing no jacket, in late November, a beer-stealing dog is pretty minor in the scheme of things.
