2009 AZ State Sub-Gun Championships

What's more fun than a Cactus League Halloween 3-Gun Match? The Arizona State Sub-Machine-gun Championship Match, held on Halloween (more fun because I didn't have to help organize or build it!)! Unfortunately, I came costumed as a blithering idiot and got disqualified for a negligent discharge... my first trip to the Dairy Queen ever.

I'd intended to do more video, but keeping my mags topped off was a full-time job even though I brought 14 of them. Then there were the mechanical problems that led to my DQ. Grr....

At least I got a cool hat out of it!

Hey, here's the whole match!

By the way, my buddy Jon won the Pistol Caliber Carbine Division with his little Kel-Tec Sub2000!!

Intimidation

Got the demonstration of the college's control room audio board today in preparation for my Basic Audio Production project. Yikes! I'd hoped to video the demo, but I was on the ragged edge of comprehension and didn't need the distraction. I get the thing all to myself next Thursday. I hope I don't forget everything by then!

When You Can't Pack Heat

... Pack Light.

On a very windy night, the power went out at the end of tonight's class and I was rather dismayed that in the whole class of budding film makers, I was the only one who had a flashlight handy. I saw a whole bunch of cellphones open up, but not another flashlight. You'd think that all these students taking a night class, especially the more vulnerable female students, would carry a small flashlight, just in case the normally well-lit parking lot became less so.

Well, sure, the lights came back on before we'd ventured very far into the parking lot... but what if it hadn't?

Sneaky Sneaker Bastards

As much as I believe the sky is blue because God is a Penn State fan, I think the squabble over this shirt has some merit. Yes, it looks like a cross, especially to someone viewing the entire student body wearing them... a TV camera wide shot pan of the crowd would sent Jewish and Muslim groups into conniptions, Osama bin Laden into apoplexy, and WV Senator Robert "Sheets" Byrd wondering where the hoods are.

From a design stand-point, I can't see the motivation for the plain, vertical bar, unless it was Christian-inspired. Heck, if there were two of them, you could make some old-fashioned goalposts.... I wonder why they don't just put a big Nike Swoosh on the front. Hey, wait... Nike was the Greek GODDESS of Victory! But no one ever seems to mind that! Great Zeus!

Weaponized

Don't remember where I got the idea this week, but I found a use for the rest of the baby carrots in the fridge that were almost overstaying their welcome. A base for a habanero pepper sauce! After I've already made my first batch did I think to G00gle a recipe or two. I took two frozen (best way to store them, I think) little orange H-Bombs, two hands full of baby carrots, and a little vinegar and water. I put two teaspoons of it in a microwaved cup of Wolf Chili and some baked beans (chili in a hurry) and it kicked ass!

I might try this recipe next.

Unfortunately for Mkweekwee, the Western African parasitical butterfly has mutated beyond the CIA's wildest dreams.

Last time he won, Timmeehh picked Bobbi X's blog for his BlogAd prize (so I'll go with that until he tells me otherwise. Since we got over 20 entries, I'd post a Runner-up, but I'd have to give it to my own caption: "Yes, He Killed Fritz."

I'm Not a Twanger

...but I play one in the movies. I don't watch CMT much (or even TV for that matter), but I've had an earworm off and on for over a year. I'm simply fascinated with how low Otto's voice goes during parts of the song. After decades of Beegees falsetto, it's refreshing to hear a male singer sound like he's got a pair.

Homework

In my Documentary for Film and TV class, we're required to propose, research, and network to produce a notional documentary on a subject of our choice. Of course, I chose a topic that I might actually produce some day, since my creative bent leads more to documentaries than to screen fiction... and since I've already got some coverage "in the can" so to speak. Now to propagate some correspondence to get some distributors interested....

Cowboy Blob, Armorer to the Stars

Well, the unpaid college student film stars, anyway. The week after we discussed prop/dressing/wardrobing our movie's police officer characters, I spied one of our College Cops sporting police gear that definitely wasn't Bianchi. On a hunch, I surfed to Cheaper Than Dirt.Com and found the same budget set of cop nylon for a couple of Jacksons and ordered one right then. It came with several more modules, including a radio holder, key carrier, a place for Mace, and some others whose functions I can only guess (unless I believe the web site). The magazine holder on the holster will hold no mag carried by any self-respecting LEO, but since the character will only have a few seconds of screen time outside of his patrol car, it ought to look real enough.

I intend to fill the baton holder this week (because who doesn't need an expanding baton?) and settled on that, mag pouches, cuff case, and holster as the bare minimum for a movie cop. Any of you LEO types out there think it's missing anything important?

Update:

Say 'ello to my little frien'.

I think the ASP baton might not end up in the props box with all the other stuff after this movie is over. Even though I can "car carry" on campus now, I still can't do so on the Air Force base where I do most of my grocery shopping. Hmmm.

The Guns of October

Sunday 9 am is the Annual Super-Fun Match at Ben Avery, where my buddy Jon has whipped up some stages that, as usual, go over and above the routine of a 3rd 4th Sunday Practice Fun Gun multi-gun match. If you just bring a pistol (you narrow-minded pistoleros), you can still play, but then you miss out on the whole 3-Gun Experience! Jon's dug out some reactive rifle targets from his toybox that should add to the uniqueness of this match. Since Jon and I are going to be there all day, we intend to shoot pistol-caliber carbine, as well as rifle-pistol-shotgun. Here's Jon running rough-shod over last year's course of fire.

As if this wasn't enough gun fun for a month, we're shooting the Arizona State Sub-Gun Match at Rio Salado on Halloween. Jon plans to wail away with his semi-auto 9-mm Kel-Tec in the PCC Division, while I'll run the Hebrewm in my first-ever purpose-made (and not made by me) full-auto match.

Pre-Productive Weekend

Doing Pre-Production.

Saturday, we had a movie casting call in addition to the two we conducted last weekend. This time we started at 2 pm (with a line formed up at the door!) and ran to 8 pm with a trickle of folks -- and a great big gulf of nothing in between. It was quite an experience to hang out with people who can call themselves "Film Makers" with a straight face. As the only crew there who didn't have "Director" in his job title somewhere, I operated the camera and tried to soak up some of the know-how.

I wasn't a total "fly on the wall;" I did point out to the Director that if the nurse is giving a sedating shot to someone in a strait-jacket, the needle wouldn't be poked into the inside of the elbow like an IV stick. I'm not a Doctor, but I know where a syringe can't find a vein through a strait-jacket!

Had a pretty good time, though some performances were painful to watch. I'm heartened that we've at least found one of our villains. Anybody know someone in Tucson who's big and can operate a chainsaw?

Pima Tactical - October

Pima's 1st Sunday 3-Gun match is struggling for participants, all thanks to some selfish people who'd rather feed their families rather than their guns.

Seriously, only four of us showed up, so we just set up one stage and shot variations of it four times. It was great practice, because I could see and feel myself improving with each repetition. The Open Division gunner kept himself within scoring range with malfunctions under the clock, but the veteran LEO (all the rest of us were Tactical Scope) hammered the course with confidence. The gunner in the video above was set-up with gear most similar to mine and ran faster times... but penalties would have made it a close match between us if he hadn't had been DQ'd on the 4th stage.

My Rock River 9-mm AR conversion ran marginally well (two jams in five magsful), and I'm getting to like it so much, I might shoot it instead of the Hebrewm at Rio's Halloween Sub-Gun match.
