It's Really Blowing

Those folks back East who still have power for the duration of Hurricane Sandy can thank their lucky stars their power lines weren't hit by falling trees. They're also lucky that an oil- or coal-fired power plant somewhere continues to run during the storm.

Wonder how those wind turbines and solar cells fare in gale-force winds and covered with sheets of rain?

Think about that next time someone says they want to replace those smokestacks with solar and wind farms.  Or maybe you like sitting in the dark with a flashlight.

Well, rain shouldn't be a problem for them (After all, heavy rain? Not unknown in that area! And waterproof enough for that should suffice for this, too.).

The wind might be an issue, though, even feathered, if it's super-duper-hurricane force.

It's not the moisture but the prolonged darkness that comes with bad weather like this that would slow solar energy collection to a trickle.

WEll, sitting in the darkness is for the hoi polloi, anyway, not for the anointed ones who really matter. They'll have approved two-stroke green generators for their estates.

I definitely think we should go to wind power; I enjoyed the darkness for a change and candle light is pretty relaxing.
