IDPA for Rifles!!

Reader Ben C tipped me off to a shooting discipline practiced by the American Confederation of Tactical Shooters! Looks interesting, but I'd have to invest in some new mag pouches to play. Muzzle brakes are verboten, except for AK-74-types and Springfield factory-installed M1A brakes...I don't know if the SOCOM's compensator (standard) fits that category.

Apparently they run these matches up in Michigan and at the Pima Pistol Club near me (PPC site doesn't mention the matches), but I edumicated myself at the ACTS AZ Forum. Well, it's something to look into....

Daisy Cat: There's definitely a match this Saturday, as per the AZ Forum. I just don't know if I want to jump through all those extra IDPA-hoops, even if it's only for practice for my annual match at the end of the month. I'm kinda leaning towards going, provided I can get my butt going Saturday morning. It probably won't be a regular thing, unless my cash flow improves unexpectedly.

I am pretty sure the factory SOCOM brake is still allowed, along with the AK brake.

Some of the other stuff that is problematic are Beta/drum mags, canted sights and things marketed as "gamer gear" or "speed" anything.

Gear does not have to be very elaborate, but police and military duty gear is very acceptable. Not having either of those careers, my kit is much simpler.

    One of these:

    with this on the front:

a duty belt, and a Safariland 6004 holster.

For a lengthy discussion of some of the rule updates, try this thread:

    http://www.actshooters.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=3;t=000023

The rifle and pistol mags pouches are both 50% coverage, it says so later in that really really long thread. New shooters are not turned away, no matter what gear they bring (within reason); you just may end up shooting in the Open class.

Their whole idea was to prevent this game from becoming a "game" and keeping it as realistic as possible while still not shooting back.

The rules in the AZ matches are slightly different from the MI matches, but the spirit of the rules remains the same.

Good luck, hope you can make it to a match.

Keep me posted if you find out that pima Pistol has a match. I still don't have my AR, but we can use James'
Nice picture on top. A new well groomed look?

I think most of the changes from the MI to AZ groups are based on range's restrictions in either location. Equipment rules should be substantially the same; with looser regulation in AZ if anything, as it is a newer group and still trying to build a member base.

For more AZ specific info contact the user "azpackrat" (Scott) on the ACTS site. Site registration is free, but I think he has this email too:

    swacts*AT*comcast*DOT*net

Registration on the ACTS online forum is free, and a great place for more info.

In the For What It's Worth Department...

The Rio Salado IDPA match is morphing away from IDPA. Apparently the IDPA folks wanted more of their structure (and $$) than we're willing to give them. It's still held the fourth Saturday, and for the time being, it's still called "IDPA", but the IDPA rules are substantially relaxed.

Back to your regularly scheduled Blob viewing....

Thanks for the info! Unfortunately we can't go because our rental property needs some fixing/cleaning to get it ready for the next people in a couple of weeks. We are for sure planning on attending the IDPA with pistols only on March 25th at Pima Pistol.

IDPA for rifles!? Too cool for school. Gonna have to see if we can get Texas on the map with this.

Argh! Too bad it has to be this weekend. That'd kick ass!

But instead I have to play "slavedriver". ;)
