F*CKF*CKF*CKF*CKF*CKF*CKF*CKF*CK

That's what I get for listening to someone who prefers to live in the Third World! He recommended I do a BOOTCFG rebuild...and following his directions, all my documents have disappeared! Okay...Super Duper Bleg: is there some way to recover from this? The "Restore" thingie doesn't seem to recognize any date before today, but the hard drive memory usage still reads at pre-nuke levels, so all might not be lost. Bueller?

Details: One op system: Windows XP. The rebuild blanked over all my documents, but the hard drive still reads 70% full. It hasn't been formatted...that I know of.

Do you have two operating systems installed on the machine? Any more details you can give?

If you are running a recent version of Winows (2000 or XP) your "my documents" directory is located in the c:\documents and settings\somewhere folder.

    The somewhere part may be "\default user\my documets\" or "\administrator\my documents\" or "\cowboy blob\my documents\"

I think you get the picture.

The desktop is under "c:\documents and settings\username\desktop" if you've got stuff sitting on your desktop...

I always always always create a specific directory that I put almost everything in, usually "c:\downloads" then have subdirectories off of that for pictures, movies, sound files, etc. That way under crash conditions they're easier to find...

Usually installing over the top of your current Windows installation will result in a usable Windows OS, and your stuff can usually be retrieved if you DON'T tell the installer to format the drive.

If both the desktop and the laptop have ethernet ports, you can get a crossover ethernet cable and link them together to transfer the files over.

Another way to transfer the files is to get a USB thumb drive/flash memory drive/whatever you want to call it to copy the files between them. Some files may be too big for some of th4e smaller thumb drives. So the ethernet way is actually better.

Once you have your files off the desktop, reinstall Windows and make sure you format the drive.

If you need help setting up the ethernet connection, let me know, I can find some resources or even be a resource on the phone for you...

I used GetDataBack from Runtime to recover from a crash where I'd lost everything from my desktop but like you was showing space being used on my hard drive. Cost $80 but it was worth it considering how much work I would have lost and time to reinstall all my games and patches...Good Luck!

See if there are extra directories under c:\documents and settings. I've seen windows reloads turn you into a "new user", leaving your old user profiles in another directory.

Looking at my work machine here, which is a hand-me-down several times over, I've got 6 user accounts besides my own and the default stuff :)

Log in as an administrator and use the find files menu to look for one of your missing documents ... simply to find out where all your crap is hiding.

If it isn't reachable as an admin, the boot the silly thing with a knoppix-std live linux CD, and search all of the damned partitions on the beast.

When you find your stuff, dump it into a USB thumb-drive, and do consider nuking and re-installing Windoz....
