Road Trip

I'm down here in beautiful, historic Laurel MD spreading Holiday Cheer with one of my oldest and bestest friends, Alan (aka Chief) and his lovely wife.  And catching up on Email while those with Eastern body clocks slumber (yeah, I'll sleep in tomorrow if I can, so help me Bushmills).

Of course, Alan's got one o' them fancy Macs... this one even surreptitiously snapped my pic and posted it on the Hot-Or-Not website.  Why does it do that, Chief?

They should call it "Hairy-or-Scary?"

Thankfully, this was the only "white stuff" I saw until I hit the PA border. The snow there was in little dirty piles on the side of the road. The only poor traction I got was from Mom's driveway (thankfully, Mom's got friends with plowblades).

What the officer said:

I'm Officer Sewenso of the East Texas Police. I pulled you over because you were in the left lane and not passing... plus, when you returned to the right lane, you didn't signal until you were already across the centerline.

What I said:

Oh.

What I could have said:

Your police car on the right shoulder (almost nosing into the traveling lane) constitutes an "emergency vehicle" and a few states I pass through explicitly declare that I must move aside for those. As you state, I wasn't passing anybody, so how important was that turn signal, except to excite a bored trooper trolling for drunk drivers after midnight?

The trooper's "interview" confirmed my suspicions; he probably wasn't that interested in my life story (as I told it), but rather was examining my speech for signs of intoxication.

What I should have said:

I'm not really "retired," I publish a blog called "Cowboy Blob's Saloon and Shootin Gallery" and I am soooo blogging this! May I take your picture? Did you know that my blog was named 55th Most Informative by a Carnegie-Mellon study? I mostly publish humorous stuff and articles on the shooting sports... wanna see the Colt Match Heavy-barrel behind my seat?

What I wouldn't have said:

Ya know, I know my carry permit is good in Texas, but I can't recall if I'm required to notify you right away....

Death Before Broccoli

You'll die from an Unlikely Illness (like the plague).

You will unfortunately succumb to a random and unlikely disease. Only to find out after death that eating more broccoli would have cured you.

I Read Books

Yeah, it's insomnia time again. This week I dug out a couple of paperbacks (published in the 195os!) to help my brain unwind for sleep.

The Wicked Blade by Robert Carse is an action/romance tale set during the decline of 1200s feudal Europe and failure of the Crusades in the Middle East. Yeah, the Wahabis were the bad guys even then. I have no idea where I got this book, but I'd never read it until now. It was generally helpful getting me some sleep.

The other oldie was a re-read of Robert S. Johnson's Thunderbolt! which had me reading through dawn this morning. Maybe I better re-read some Tom Clancy novels if I want sleep.

Brrr....

I had to turn on the heat this weekend. It's still raining. At least I've got my health. [Knocks on wood]

Even though there's no word on the match re-sked, I'm postponing the road trip a week just to give this weather pattern a chance to die.

Yeah, laugh all you want at my misery! When you're still shoveling snow in March while I'm wearing shorts....

Bonus Weekend Photoshop Contest

Sticky until Monday
Emo Kid Bobby Hawkins couldn't handle his rotten life and decided to end it. No problem with that... razor blades are cheap and society is better off without him. But No, Emo Kid Bobby Hawkins wanted to go out with a bang and "be famous" as a by-product. He blasted away at bystanders in an Omaha shopping mall with a semi-automatic rifle before ending his own miserable life.

Your mission, Dear Photoshop Elves and Gremlins, is to make Emo Kid Bobby Hawkins FAMOUS in the most humiliating and/or humorous manner possible, using your photoshop skills. Winners gets a one-week Blog Ad on my side bar. This is a PG-13 blog, so if you're p-shopping Emo Kid Bobby having rough sex in Hell with VT killer Cho Sung-hui, please keep it tasteful (or provide a URL and I'll mark the link "NSFW").

Virtually Date Ariane

Now that I've got a post that gets at least as many hits as Jon's KelTec review post, I better do something to justify the interest. This is not a walk-through of the game, but some advice to keep you from failing miserably.

  • No hard liquor at home!
  • No more than two glasses of wine before dinner, no more than two with or after dinner.
  • No more than two martinis at the club; club soda for you, Mr. Designated Driver!
  • If you're staying at home, make sure you look at the stars. The only tough one is Triangulus, which is right under your cursor.
  • If you're taking her downtown for dinner, skip the wine altogether except one with dinner (while this won't eliminate failure, you'll get to experience more).
  • Skip the Spin-the-bottle and Rock-paper-scissor unless you want a new challenge.
  • Skip the amusement park and boat ride (okay, try them once just to see the pictures).
  • Be a gentleman, at least until she starts being naughty.
  • When coaching the strip-tease, avoid repeating moves until you've used the others.

There are still some things in the game at which to fail, but these lead to interesting pics and self-evident lessons. If you're really stuck, keep G00gling for a real walk-through, or Email me for help.

Oleg Volk is featuring some fine Cavalry Arms stuff lately. I'm oh, so covetous of this bright blue receiver and furniture. Okay, maybe a Mustang GT convertible in the same hue. And the girl. Damn nice color. I might have to take advantage of their competition pricing this next year. Of course, I need another AR like I need a hole in the head, but I can dream, right?

Rained Out Again

Why am I surfing the blogs instead of enjoying gun fun in the sun? What sun? It's been raining all day! I made the trip to Pima anyway, only to meet Scott and Kelly as they were being chased off by the Rangemaster (who apparently didn't want to get stranded by a rain-filled wash). Waah. Scott's considering putting on the match next Saturday, in which case I'm likely to postpone my vacation road trip a week. It's been a whole month -- I'm going through .223 withdrawal!

Prescient Laziness

On inspection of the bays at the range, the match for today 12/2/07 has been
canceled. We are unable to drive into the bays to setup the stages and
standing water at the berms present a safety hazard. See you in January.
This would have come too late to prevent a wasted 2-hour drive for me, but at oh-dark-thirty I'd already decided to lounge around in my jammies and put on a pot of real coffee today. Now I've got eight loaded Uzi magazines in my range box... I think I'll download them through the muzzle after next Saturday's ACTS match. Maybe the MD will let me run through a stage or two with it.

Under the Weather

No, I feel fine. The wetlands in my back yard is still saturated after two days of rain; it was continuous through the night. It's still drippy-cloudy out there. I wasn't planning on going anywhere today, but....

Tomorrow's the last Cactus League USPSA match of the year, and I was considering zooming up there early in the morning to have some gun fun. For the past two years, the December match has been canceled on-site due to high winds. They've never called one due to mud, AFAIK. The forecast for tomorrow calls for sunny... Hmmm, do I go? Or do I sleep in and watch football?

There's a huge gun show up there this weekend, but it's too close to Xmas for me. Jon's out of town, so I can't really hang out in PHX for a while. I can always race back and catch some of the late football. Sounds like another decision I'll have to make at 3 a.m. again.
